St. Joseph Catholic Church
146, Knyaz Boris I Street
In town, Catholicism is the fourth largest religion and the church is the third largest Catholic cathedral in Bulgaria.
In 1944 during the bombarding in the Second World War, the old building was fully destroyed. For 50 years it was not restored. Until 2002, when the first stone of the new church was laid by Pope John Paul II during his visit in Sofia.
At present, the building is a new and modern temple, whereas the facade refers to the appearance of the old cathedral destroyed by bombarding. It could take up to 1000 worshippers. It is equipped with 4 digitally activated bells, a beautiful digital keyboard instrument and 7-meter long wooden crucifix.
At both sides of the atrium there are statues of the patron Saint Joseph and Saint Francis of Assisi, in honour of the fact it is being managed by the Capuchins order, whose founder and patron is Saint Francis.
The proximity to the mosque, the Orthodox Church “Sveta Nedelya” and the synagogue witness the good co-existance of religions throughout centuries, until present days.
